Vice President Yemi Osinbajo Monday received briefings from the Inspector General of Police ( IGP) Ibrahim Idris, on the current security situation in the country as Police announce the rescue of Michael Obi, the father of Nigerian footballer and Captain of the Super Eagle, John Mikel Obi.
The visit to the Presidential Villa, BusinessDay gathered on Monday was not unconnected with the series of insecurity across the country, including the alleged kidnapping of Michael Obi, the father of Nigerian footballer and Captain of the Super Eagle, John Mikel Obi.
Mikel Obi’s father was allegedly abducted on June 29 along Enugu- Makurdi road , while traveling from Jos to Enugu but was rescued inside a forest in Udi local government area of Enugu state on Monday afternoon.
The Police said Mikel Obi’s father and his driver, Ishaya John, were rescued unhurt inside the forest of Egede-Udi forest, along old Egede Affa road in Enugu state.
It was however not clear if the family paid the N10 million ransom demanded by the kidnapers
BusinessDay gathered that the IGP briefing was in place of the regular security meeting held on Mondays with President Muhamamdu Buhari and the security Chiefs.
It was gathered that the meeting could not hold due to the absence of the President who was away in Mauritania throughout the weekend for the Africa Union ( AU) meetings.
President Buhari had before his departure approved security arrangements known as Operation Safe Haven with the mandate to restore peace in Plateau and Operation Whirl Stroke I for Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba states while Operation Whirl Stroke 11 is dedicated to restoring normalcy in the troubled Kaduna and Zamfara states.
It was gathered that the IGP provided updates on the progress including reports on the latest attacks that led to the death of five persons and burning of houses in a fresh attack.
