PharmAccess Foundation, an international not-for-profit organization is collaborating with the Enterprise Development Centre (EDC) of the Pan Atlantic University to facilitate the Healthcare Management Program (HMP), a certificate course, to build capacity of healthcare professionals in areas of quality assurance, finance, business and inventory management.
The five month HMP course which started this December is design to run four-days per week in and off classroom concurrently at the EDC. The program is structured to support professional development of medical doctors from all specialties, pharmacists, laboratory scientists and technicians, dentists and health industry regulators to deepen capacity along the sectors’ value chain in Nigeria.
Njide Ndili, Country Director, PharmAccess Foundation Nigeria in a statement said the course is designed to help build managerial capacity of healthcare service providers. “People running healthcare organisations need to understand how to run their organisations as businesses,” she stated at the launch of the HMP inaugural lecture.
According to Ndili, “Over the years PharmAccess has ran several programs in the healthcare space in Nigeria, however we have come to realise while working with hospitals and healthcare providers that there is a knowledge gap in the industry and so the HMP was developed to bridge that gap.”
Nneka Okekearu, Deputy Director, Enterprise Development Centre (EDC), Pan Atlantic University in her remarks said the collaboration with PharmAccess on the HMP certificate course was to deepen the skills set of practitioners in the healthcare delivery system.
According to her, “HMP is design to make healthcare providers understand that quality healthcare is much broader than providing care to patients. Today’s most successful healthcare professionals are also knowledgeable in essential business and management principles.”
Okekearu stated that professionals along the healthcare value chain must be able to effectively lead people, understand the financial landscape, create budgets and navigate the regulatory environment whether they are in private practice or manage the health facilities.
The HMP course modules focuses on overview of the healthcare landscape in Nigeria, regulatory, legal and tax issues in Nigeria, operations management in business, principles of contracting and procurement in healthcare business, financial management, developing a business plan for healthcare business, infrastructure development and equipment management, Business ethics and corporate governance, as well as quality assurance in healthcare delivery.
