The 2026 Argungu Motor Rally showcased Nigeria’s evolving automotive ecosystem, as brands, including OMAA Motors and Yutong, navigated more than 3,000 kilometres across northern Nigeria.
The motor rally was part of the event that marked the 61st edition of the historic Argungu Fishing Festival in Kebbi State, demonstrating the growing scale and complexity of Nigeria’s automotive showcase culture.
This year’s edition reflected both ambition and adaptation, as organisers and stakeholders of the event navigated through evolving regulatory guidance, logistics co-ordination, and operational realities to execute the event.
The Motor Rally featured over 25 different distinct vehicle brands and models across multiple segments such as the OMAA and Yutong model line-ups, JIM-Isuzu Pickup, Wulin SUV, LSM Pickup and passenger bus, GAC Sedan, luxury and compact SUVs, and the JMC Pickup.

The three-day display of driving skills cut through challenging and, in some stretches, deteriorating road networks across Abuja, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, and Kebbi states before returning to the take-off point, testing durability, fuel efficiency, and road adaptability.
Industry stakeholders noted that the rally served as a practical demonstration of how locally assembled and distributed vehicles perform under real Nigerian road conditions.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Chinedu Oguegbu, Managing Director of OMAA Motors, commended the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) for supporting the rally and sustaining its legacy.
Oguegbu described the event as a welcome return after a five-year hiatus, noting improvements in security and the opportunity for local assemblers to test their vehicles in a competitive yet relaxed environment outside factory settings.
“We are taking out the positives following the return of the event after five years,” he said, highlighting the warm reception from state governments along the route and expressing optimism about stronger outcomes in future editions.
However, beneath the successful showcase, participants pointed to areas requiring structural refinement. During overnight stops, drivers and technical teams were seen reviewing daily risk profiles, reflecting the demanding nature of the route and the importance of coordinated safety planning.

Concerns also emerged over the absence of a medical team on the return journey from Argungu to Abuja, raising questions about contingency planning and convoy-wide health coverage.
Stakeholders noted that as the rally scales in size and visibility, pre-event planning must become more robust and proactive. They called for improvement in route security coordination, technical inspection protocols, emergency response coverage, vehicle support logistics, and inter-agency communication.
Participants cited instances of unclear programme sequencing, communication gaps, and inconsistencies in agenda execution. While these issues did not derail the rally, they created operational friction that stakeholders believe can be avoided in subsequent editions.
Despite the challenges, the 2026 Argungu Motor Rally remains a significant milestone in Nigeria’s automotive calendar. It reinforced the importance of collaboration between manufacturers, regulators, and event coordinators while demonstrating the growing public and industry interest in locally assembled and distributed vehicle brands.
As Nigeria seeks to strengthen its automotive development ecosystem, events of this scale will require tighter coordination, clearer communication channels, and stronger safety protocols to maintain credibility and long-term sustainability.
