Olufemi Oluyede has officially assumed office as the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), taking over from Christopher Musa in a ceremony held at the Defence Headquarters, Abuja.
In his inaugural address, Oluyede expressed deep gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for the trust and confidence reposed in him to lead the nation’s defence at what he described as a “critical period” for national security.
“This appointment is a call to higher service. I pledge to devote my energy, experience, and vision to safeguarding Nigeria’s peace, unity, and territorial integrity”, he said.

The new CDS vowed to consolidate on the solid foundation laid by his predecessor, assuring that all existing policies and strategies aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and inter-agency coordination would be strengthened.
Oluyede emphasised that his tenure would focus on fostering deeper collaboration among the Army, Navy, and Air Force to confront evolving security threats.
He stressed that success in modern warfare depends on synergy and intelligence sharing among all security agencies.
“Security is not a one-man affair but a collective responsibility that demands discipline, innovation, and constant vigilance.
“Under my watch, the Armed Forces will operate with professionalism, transparency, and respect for human rights”, he declared.
He also paid glowing tribute to General Musa, describing him as a disciplined and visionary leader whose dedication has left a legacy of stability and operational excellence.
“Musa’s leadership has built a solid structure that will serve as a springboard for future reforms and strategic initiatives,” Oluyede noted.
In his farewell remarks, Musa, the outgoing CDS, reflected on his years of service and the milestones achieved under his command.

He acknowledged the challenges faced by the Armed Forces during his tenure but expressed satisfaction that the military had remained united, resilient, and mission-focused.
“I thank President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve and every officer and soldier for their loyalty and sacrifice.
“Though I am bowing out of active service, my heart remains with the military and with Nigeria. I will always be ready to serve my country in any way possible”, Musa said.
The highlights of the event include the signing of handover notes, the decoration of Oluyede with the Defence Headquarters insignia, and the ceremonial lowering and presentation of the Defence Headquarters flag to Musa, signifying the peaceful and honourable transfer of authority.
