….Training targets individuals, companies in the grain processing sector
The Bühler Grain Processing Innovation Centre (GPIC) has launched new courses focused on rice milling and optical sorting for individuals and businesses working in Nigeria’s grain processing sector and across Africa.
The training takes place from May 12 to 15, 2025 at GPIC in Kano state, and is developed in collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP) and GIZ, in beginner and advanced levels.
The course offerings include Fundamentals of Rice Milling and Optical Sorting training (Levels 1, 2, and 3, building on previous efforts that trained more than 60 rice millers.
Nigeria’s import of grain and food products has contributed to negative trade balances, creating negative cycles of high inflation, weakened local currencies, and forex shortages.
The mission of the training is now to capitalise on Nigeria’s arable land, abundant local grains, and the potential to feed its people and even export any surplus. It will also work to improve local grain processing by addressing technological gaps.
According to Thomas Ogundiran, managing director of Bühler Nigeria,
“Bühler is excited about the GPIC and the impact these new courses will have on the grain processing industry. By promoting education and skill development, we are contributing to food security and the sustainability and profitability of food production in Nigeria and Africa”.
The courses aim to advance industrialisation and local food production to provide practical and impactful education to individuals and companies dedicated to improving food security and economic prosperity in the region.
Mustafa Rajab, Head of the GPIC, says, “The introduction of these advanced courses represents a significant milestone for GPIC. We are committed to driving innovation in grain processing and supporting the growth of this industry in Nigeria and Africa.”
