As part of its drive to cushion the admission challenges Nigerian students face annually, the University of Dayton in Ohio, United States, has announced a ground breaking global partnership which will enable Nigerian students to qualify for undergraduate admission with only their West Africa Examination Certificate (WAEC).
What this implies is that the Nigerian students can gain admission and be exempted from sitting the U.S. equivalent of JAMB called the SAT and also be exempted from applications fees.
Selma Toohey, Regional Manager for West Africa of the institution while speaking in Lagos said she and her colleagues decided to visit the country to evaluate the Nigerian curriculum at both secondary and university levels.
According to Toohey, “Students can study MBA, Masters of Law, Public Administration, Cyber Security and a wide range of Engineering courses including Aerospace, Bioengineering, Civil, Renewable and Clean Energy, Electrical Engineering and more. Scholarships of up to 5,000 USD are available for postgraduate courses.”
“There are over 10,000 Nigerian students studying in the United States because of the world class quality of institutions. University of Dayton is ranked 56 Best Engineering Schools in the USA (U.S News and World Reports). We are very excited that Dayton is actively seeking brilliant Nigerian students for admission by making their transition to the U.S. warm and streamlined,” she said.
Michael Lawson, regional director, Dayton University, said that Nigerian students with outstanding WAEC results would be exempted from additional entrance exams and given partial merit scholarships if they had good grades.
According to him, “Undergraduate students with a Distinction average will automatically qualify for a 10,000 USD academic scholarship per annum. Students who are seeking postgraduate admission who have a 2:1 or First Class will be awarded a 5,000 USD academic scholarship.”
Fatima Ganaka, assistant recruitment manager, Northern Nigeria, enjoined students wishing to study for their undergraduate degree at the University of Dayton to have WAEC results, an international passport, proof of funding, and an application form for admission.
