The Super Eagles of Nigeria and Gabon will lock horns on Thursday evening in a 2026 FIFA World Cup African playoff semi-final at the Complexe Sportif Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan in Rabat, Morocco.
The crucial clash offers both sides a second shot at reaching the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, after missing out on automatic qualification during Africa’s gruelling 23-month campaign.
Victory will secure a final berth on Sunday against either Cameroon or DR Congo, also in Rabat.

Nigeria Determined to Avoid Another Miss
For Nigeria, a six-time World Cup finalist, missing another tournament after the heartbreak of Qatar 2022 would be disastrous. The Super Eagles are determined to return to football’s grandest stage.
Head coach Eric Chelle, unbeaten in four qualifying matches (three wins and a draw), is expected to stick with goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali. Injuries and suspensions mean a likely defensive lineup of Benjamin Fredericks, William Troost-Ekong, Calvin Bassey, and Zaidu Sanusi.

In midfield, Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, and Frank Onyeka are set to provide balance and control.
Up front, Victor Osimhen will spearhead the Super Eagles’ attack alongside Samuel Chukwueze and Ademola Lookman.
Osimhen, who netted six goals during qualification, boasts 29 goals in 44 appearances for Nigeria and 160 career club goals, underlining his elite status.
Gabon Banking on Aubameyang’s Experience
Gabon, which finished as the best second runners-up among the nine qualification groups, will once again look to veteran striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to inspire an upset.
The 36-year-old Marseille forward, formerly of Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund, remains the heartbeat of the Panthers’ attack.
Coach Thierry Mouyouma is expected to retain his familiar core, Loyce Mbaba in goal, with Jacques Ekomie, Bruno Manga, Mick Omfia, and Anthony Oyono in defence.
The midfield trio of Guélor Kanga, Mario Lemina, and Didier Ndong will orchestrate play, while Aubameyang, Denis Bouanga, and Noah Lemina lead the front line.
Mouyouma has hinted at employing a quick, short-passing approach to disrupt Nigeria’s rhythm, while Chelle has kept his tactical plans under wraps.
Historical Edge Favours Nigeria
Nigeria has historically dominated this matchup, winning five out of nine previous encounters against Gabon. The only victory for the Panthers came in a 2-1 World Cup qualifier in 1989, a result that notably cost Nigeria a chance to compete in the 1990 World Cup in Italy.
Three encounters have ended in draws, but Thursday’s clash must produce a winner, with a World Cup lifeline at stake.
As both nations prepare for a fiery night in Rabat, one truth stands out: only one team will move a step closer to their World Cup dream.
