Barau Jibrin, the Deputy President of the Senate, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District, describing him as a committed patriot and an exceptional lawmaker.
Akwashiki reportedly died on Wednesday at an Indian hospital at the age of 52 years.
In a statement issued on Thursday by Ismail Mudashir, his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Barau said the late senator’s death was a painful loss not only to Nasarawa State but to the National Assembly and the country at large.
Born in Angba Iggah, Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Akwashiki was first elected to the Senate in 2019 and was re-elected in 2023, serving his second term before his death.
Barau, who is also the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, said Akwashiki distinguished himself through his dedication to legislative duties and his passion for improving the lives of his constituents.
“Senator Akwashiki was a parliamentarian par excellence who worked hard to enhance the standard of living of the people of Nasarawa North Senatorial District and beyond,” Barau said.
