The Nigerian Aviation Fire and Safety Association (NAFSA) has issued a stern warning regarding the escalating culture of unruly behaviour exhibited by air passengers.
In a letter addressed to Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, NAFSA emphasised that past leniency in handling such incidents has emboldened disruptive behaviour, thereby compromising airport safety.
NAFSA, a professional and independent non-governmental association with nearly three decades of experience, has positioned itself as a guardian of safety in the aviation sector.

The association collaborates with key aviation authorities, including the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), and others, to ensure high safety standards in airports nationwide.
The Growing Concern
Recent incidents involving high-profile figures, such as Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, KWAM 1, and Miss Comfort Emmanson, have brought to the forefront the dangers of unruly behaviour, posing threats to staff, passengers, and overall airport security.
NAFSA attributes these behaviours to weak enforcement of regulations, inadequate deterrents, economic pressures, and a general disregard for airport authorities.
The need for decisive action
NAFSA’s letter to the Minister highlights the critical need for decisive and consistent enforcement of regulations. The association warns that past leniency has created a perception of impunity, encouraging others to emulate disruptive conduct. With the upcoming yuletide season expected to see higher passenger volumes, NAFSA cautions that decisive action is necessary to prevent an escalation of unruly behaviour.
Recommendations for Improvement
NAFSA has made several recommendations to improve the handling of unruly passengers, including:
Strict Enforcement: Decisive and consistent enforcement of regulations is critical to deterring unruly behaviour.
No Pardon: No disorderly passenger should be pardoned in future cases.

Training: Airport staff must be trained in conflict de-escalation to manage situations calmly while maintaining safety.
Staff Postings: Reviewing staff postings in sensitive areas can help prevent complacency or overstretch, especially during peak periods.
Timely Adjudication: Timely adjudication of unruly passenger cases is essential to prevent impunity and maintain public confidence in the justice process.
NAFSA’s call for a zero-tolerance regime underscores the need for a more robust approach to managing unruly passengers. By implementing these recommendations, the body says the aviation industry can work towards creating a safer and more secure environment for all stakeholders.
