Miva Open University has enrolled over 20,000 students since it began operations in May 2023, highlighting a shift in the way Nigerians approach higher education. The milestone reflects growing interest in flexible, technology-enabled learning that allows students to combine studies with work, family, and other commitments.
Sim Shagaya, Group Chief Executive Officer of uLesson Group and Chancellor of Miva Open University, said: “We have just crossed an important milestone at Miva. The pace of adoption tells us something clear. Learners are ready for a different kind of university experience. One that fits into real lives without compromising on quality. To our students, thank you for trusting us with your future. To our team, thank you for building what truly matters. We are only getting started.”
Miva Open University was set up to provide access to higher education for working professionals, entrepreneurs, parents, and first-time university students. Its programmes are designed to be flexible, affordable, and aligned with practical skills needed in today’s economy. The milestone indicates not just growth in numbers but also the impact on students’ careers and communities.
Grace Akubuiro, a Public Health student at Miva, said: “Choosing Miva Open University has been one of the best decisions I made in 2025. I first came across Miva on Facebook, and what stood out immediately was the emphasis on flexibility. That was exactly what I needed. Coming from a traditional university, I did not think this level of flexibility was possible. At Miva, I have been able to run my business, work as a virtual assistant, and keep up with my studies, all while earning a 4.50 CGPA in my first semester.”
Miva continues to invest in improving access, enhancing the learning experience, and maintaining academic standards. The university also aims to respond to the evolving needs of learners across Nigeria and beyond.
Looking ahead, Shagaya said: “By 2027, we aim to serve 100,000 students. Within a decade, one million. Some may see those numbers as ambitious. We see them as necessary. But this is not about numbers alone. It is about transformation. It is about building a Nigeria where every qualified learner has access to quality education. It is about a continent where young people are creating opportunity, not searching for it elsewhere.”
Miva Open University is Nigeria’s first operational private open university. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes through online distance learning, with a focus on providing education that meets academic and professional goals.
