Ifeyinwa Osime has spent decades preparing for moments that do not announce themselves loudly. Her appointment as chairman of the board of Access Bank Plc is one of them. Deliberate and rooted in long service, it reflects a career built on governance, judgement and institutional trust.
Access Holdings Plc disclosed that Osime was appointed chairman following the retirement of Paul Usoro on January 29, 2026, after he completed his regulatory tenure. For Africa’s largest bank by customer base, the choice signals continuity rather than disruption.

Osime is a familiar presence at Access Bank. She joined the board in November 2019 as an independent non-executive director and quickly became central to its governance structure. Before she was appointed chairman, she led the board’s Human Resources and Sustainability Committee and the board’s governance, nomination and Remuneration Committee, two roles that placed her at the heart of leadership development and board oversight.
Announcing the appointment, Aigboje Aig Imoukhuede, group chairman of Access Holdings Plc, highlighted her alignment with the bank’s values and long-term vision.

“Mrs Osime is a principled and experienced leader with a deep understanding of the Bank’s strategy and values,” he said. “She has demonstrated strong commitment to the Bank’s vision and mission, and I am confident that, under her leadership, the Bank will continue to advance its strategic objectives of delivering sustainable value to shareholders and other stakeholders.”
Her path to the boardroom was shaped early by law and regulation. Osime began her career at the Nigeria Reinsurance Corporation before moving to African Development Insurance Company Limited, now NSIA Insurance. There, she served as company secretary and assistant general manager for administration and legal, roles that exposed her to corporate structure, compliance and risk at a formative stage.
Over the years, she built a broad portfolio of board experience across financial services and insurance. She has served as an independent non-executive director at Coronation Insurance Plc, board chairman of Coronation Life Insurance Company Ltd and non-executive director at Bank PHB, now Keystone Bank Limited. These roles cemented her reputation as a steady and thoughtful board leader.

Outside Access Bank, Osime is a director at Ebudo Trust Limited and a partner at McPherson Legal Practitioners, where she advises on corporate and commercial legal matters and contributes to the firm’s strategic direction. She is also a partner at Smartbase Services, further widening her exposure to business leadership beyond banking.
Her academic record reflects the same depth. A graduate of the University of Benin, she was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1987 and later earned a Master of Laws in commercial and corporate law from the London School of Economics. She has also attended executive education programmes at INSEAD, IMD, Harvard Business School, MIT and Stanford.
Professionally, Osime is a member of the Nigerian Bar Association, Women Corporate Directors Nigeria Chapter, and the Chartered Institute of Directors Nigeria, where she serves on the executive committee of the women sectoral group.
Beyond the boardroom, she is committed to mentoring young professionals and supporting initiatives focused on autism and developmental delays, a quieter side of her leadership that speaks to inclusion and social responsibility.
