Manchester United’s faint hopes of salvaging a dismal season now rest solely on the Europa League, a competition that has suddenly taken on immense significance both on and off the pitch.
The Red Devils travel to France to face Lyon on Thursday in the first leg of their quarter-final clash — the clubs’ first meeting since Cristiano Ronaldo’s decisive goal in a last-16 tie back in 2008, which propelled United toward their last Champions League triumph.
Europa League, Amorim’s United lifeline
After a dreary 0-0 draw with Manchester City last weekend, United find themselves languishing in 13th place in the Premier League — their worst top-flight standing in over three decades. The pressure is mounting on manager Rúben Amorim, who admitted bluntly that his side must improve “everywhere.”
The Europa League now represents United’s only realistic path back into European competition next season. Anything short of lifting the trophy in Bilbao next month could come with severe financial consequences, including a reported £100 million shortfall from missing out on Champions League revenue.
“It’s not the most important thing for Manchester United because we have a lot of things to do, but you can see it — in this season, the Europa League is really important,” Amorim said.
“We can reach the Champions League next season, we can win something, so we are going to do everything to try to go to the next stage.”
Failure to win the Europa League could severely hamper United’s plans to refresh an underperforming squad in the summer window, especially under looming Financial Fair Play constraints.
Fernandes key to United’s hopes
Bruno Fernandes, who netted a hat-trick in United’s 5-2 aggregate win over Real Sociedad in the previous round, will once again be pivotal. The Portuguese midfielder leads the club with 16 goals this season — nearly double that of his closest teammate — but has urged the team to rediscover their cutting edge after back-to-back goalless performances.
Despite growing transfer speculation linking him with Real Madrid, Amorim has insisted Fernandes is “not going anywhere” this summer.
