Liverpool, who still have five matches to play, can officially seal the title if they avoid defeat against Tottenham at Anfield on Sunday. That result would see them match bitter rivals Manchester United’s record of 20 top-flight titles.
Arsenal’s stuttering form, three draws in their last four league outings, has proven costly. Jakub Kiwior gave the hosts an early lead, only for Eberechi Eze to level for Palace. Leandro Trossard restored Arsenal’s advantage before the break, but Mateta came off the bench to score a sublime late equaliser.
The Gunners had previously kept Liverpool waiting with a 4-0 thrashing of Ipswich on Sunday, but their hopes of catching the leaders are now hanging by a thread.
With attention quickly turning to Europe, Arsenal’s real focus lies on their Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain. The first leg at the Emirates on Tuesday marks their first appearance in the last four of the competition since 2009.
Despite claiming he wouldn’t rest key players for the Palace clash, Mikel Arteta opted to bench Bukayo Saka after the winger picked up a knock in last weekend’s win over Ipswich. Injuries to Mikel Merino and Ben White further limited Arsenal’s options in a crucial fixture.
