The Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo has taken the initiative to enhance leadership skills, resilience and life beyond the classroom among youngsters on campus.
The university debate society recently hosted its seventh flagship storytelling event, ‘LISTEN, I Have a Story’, with a theme, “Zenith” at the institution’s main campus in its efforts to equip the students for life beyond the classroom.

“Life is full of ups and downs. For every ladder, there is a zenith. You must always reach out for it,” she said.
The event brought together over 5,000 participants including online participants such as students, alumni, and guests who engaged in a series of reflective conversations on leadership, resilience, and life beyond the classroom.
Mavis Orji, one of the guest speakers, emphasised the importance of visibility and self-belief when he said, “Nobody has to believe in you. What matters is when you paint a movie and become the hero in it.
“You can’t do anything if you don’t show yourself; you must make up your mind to not listen to the voice of negativity.”
Tobi Makinde, a renowned Nollywood actor and media entrepreneur, urged students to prioritise excellence and personal development.
“Don’t do anything anyhow, do it with excellence. In everything you do, don’t think it is money you need first. Dream big. You can’t become anything if you don’t show your capabilities. Never settle for less,” Makinde said.
As the official public speaking and leadership body of Lagos State University, LSUDS organises LISTEN annually to help students draw lessons from real-life stories shared by individuals who have navigated personal and professional challenges.
The 2025 edition featured speakers across various industries, including education, media, and entrepreneurship. They shared personal stories focused on leadership, visibility, and long-term growth.
Dignitaries at the event include Juliana Oloyede, Eric Gugua, Frank Ikemefume, Victor Okafor, Sola Adesakin, and Adeseni Ilemobade.
Over the years, the debate society of Lagos State University’s ‘LISTEN’ event has evolved into a platform where students learn from lived experiences.
By positioning storytelling as a tool for reflection and growth, the LASU debate society continues to support the development of leadership skills among young people within and beyond the university community.
In Nigeria, stakeholders believe that with adequate soft-skills, and creating a supportive environment, the country can unlock the potential of its youth and harness their energy and talents for national development.
