Lagos clamps down on unregistered education centres
Lagos State government is shutting all unregistered tutorial and continuing education centres in the state, starting from September 11, 2017.
Obafela Bank-Olemoh, special adviser to the state governor on education, said the exercise would be carried out by the Agency for Mass Education, and was necessitated by the refusal of some operators of tutorial and continuing education centres to comply with the state’s directive to register their centres and pay up their annual dues after several notices had been served on them.
An earlier decision to clamp down on the education centres was suspended after a closed-door meeting with critical stakeholders in the sector on Monday, September 26, 2016. In the meeting, Bank-Olemoh had communicated the resolve of the government to standardize the educational sector in line with international best practices and sought the buy-in of the stakeholders.
But it appears all is still not well in the sector as several follow-up engagements with stakeholders have failed to produce the desired result.
Bank-Olemoh said it was now time to enforce compliance with set standards in line with Edict No 2, Section 4.3 of 1991 that mandated the Agency for Mass Education to control the activities of tutorial and continuing education centres in Lagos.
According to Bank-Olemoh, “Lagos residents enroll in these tutorial centres and as government; we must ensure that quality service is delivered to our people. We must set standards and enforce it.”
He advised operators of all such centres to register with the agency and pay up all stipulated dues to avoid clashing with the law.
