Alex Iwobi was on the scoring chart as Fulham struck three times in 14 first-half minutes to claim a thrilling 3-2 victory against Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday at Craven Cottage.
The defeat was Liverpool’s second Premier League defeat of the season, bolstering Fulham’s European ambitions and dealing a blow to the Reds’ title march.
After Arsenal’s 1-1 draw at Everton on Saturday, Arne Slot’s men needed just 11 points from their final eight games to clinch a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title. That target remains unchanged, but their aura of invincibility took a hit at Craven Cottage.
Mac Allister’s screamer
Liverpool appeared to be in control after Alexis Mac Allister opened the scoring with a sensational long-range strike after just 14 minutes.
However, defensive lapses saw Fulham hit back in devastating fashion. Ryan Sessegnon, Alex Iwobi, and Rodrigo Muniz capitalized on poor Liverpool defending to turn the game on its head before the interval.
“It’s not often we concede three goals, let alone in one game or in 15 minutes,” said a visibly frustrated Arne Slot.
Signs of fatigue for quadruple-chasing Reds
Despite a largely impressive first season under Slot, Liverpool appear to be running out of steam after competing across four competitions. They recently suffered a Champions League exit to PSG, a League Cup final defeat to Newcastle, and needed a late winner to edge Everton 1-0 in midweek.
Liverpool still sit 11 points clear at the top with seven games to play, but rivals will take confidence from Fulham’s blueprint of how to hurt the league leaders.
Fulham eye European spot as Silva hails display
The win lifts Fulham to eighth, just three points off the top five, a position that is likely to secure qualification for European football next season.
“Our first half was really at a high level,” said Fulham boss Marco Silva.
“To have 10 shots and score three goals in the first half – we had a good dynamic, good tempo, high energy.”
