Ogbue joined the UBA board in 2005 as a non-executive director and was appointed chairman in 2011. He retired in 2013 after overseeing what the bank called a period marked by strong governance, accountability and a focus on long-term sustainability.
“During his tenure, he provided steady and principled leadership at a defining period in our transformation,” the bank said. “He reinforced a culture of corporate governance, accountability and long-term sustainability that continues to guide the group.”

Born on February 18, 1927, in Onicha Olona in Delta state, Ogbue began his professional life in the federal civil service before travelling to the United Kingdom for further studies. He later built a distinguished career at the National Insurance Corporation of Nigeria, rising through senior management ranks and serving until his retirement in 1988.
His experience and reputation for sound judgment earned him appointments on the boards of several leading institutions, including UBA.

Beyond his corporate achievements, Ogbue was known within business and social circles as a devoted family patriarch. He was the father of Awele Elumelu, chairman of Transcorp Hotels, and father-in-law to Tony Elumelu, group chairman of UBA Group.
The bank said he often attributed his long life to God’s grace and encouraged younger generations to pursue ambition with moderation and remain steadfast in times of adversity.
UBA extended its condolences to his wife, children, grandchildren and wider family, noting that funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
