The Imo government said on Wednesday it had started laying underground armoured cables to replace overhead ones.
Ifeanyi Nwachukwu, the commissioner for public utilities, public safety and youths entrepreneurship, disclosed this shortly after inspecting the laying of the cables.
According to him, the cables, being laid along Wethedral Road in Owerri, are part of measures to beautify the major roads in the state.

The commissioner, who described as bad, a situation whereby overhead wires had been littering the state capital, said Douglas, Bank, Okigwe and Orlu roads had been mapped out for laying of cables.
He said the government had started removing overhead wires, and urged members of the public to cooperate with the construction workers undertaking the exercise.
“Part of the rescue mission agenda of the present administration is to ensure that Owerri, the state capital, is returned as one of the cleanest states in the country.
“We are removing the overhead wires and replacing them with new underground ones to give the state a better look,” he said.
