The House of Representatives Committee on Disability Matters has partnered with the Sustainable Development for African Youth Initiative (SUDAYI) to promote inclusivity and empower Persons with Disabilities.
Bashiru Dawudo, chairman House Committee on Disabilities Matters, in his remarks, said the National Assembly in fulfilling its mandate passed the Disability Act 2018 aimed at ensuring more inclusion of persons with Disability in Nigeria.
The Chairman have the remarks at the unveiling of the project which held at the National Assembly Complex, in Abuja on Thursday, March 20, 2025.
He recalled that the ACT passed in 2018 by President Muhammadu Buhari was named the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities Prohibition Act 2018 and was for the sole purpose of protecting persons with disabilities and ensuring their inclusivity in all social, economic and national
The Chairman stated that the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities Act of 2018 will among other things, ensure the prohibition of discrimination and penalties, accessibility to physical structures, Liberties, Rights to Education, Health and opportunity for employment among several others.
In her remarks, Victoria Nyam Jim, Chairman SUDAYI, commended the efforts and the support by the committee, noting that her passion for supporting people with disabilities was from an ingrained passion and not because of a personal experience.
Jim said, “SUDAYI had 4 focused thematic goals, which include Sustainable Development for African Youth Initiative, Focusing on the Development of People with Special Needs, as well as youths and women empowerment and Research and Innovation from sustainable Development in Africa”.
“Our mission is to inspire and equip African Youth, especially those with special needs to become leaders in sustainable development by providing education, mentorship and opportunities”
“We aim to promote environmental sustainability and economic empowerment and social equity, ensuring that young people are at the forefront of creating a resilient and prosperous Africa” she added
“We also aim to empower young African Women through education, skills training and economic opportunities, advocate for gender equality and promote leadership roles for women in sustainable development among others”.
