The Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a UK-based higher education analytics firm, released its 2026 World University Rankings on June 19, 2025, involving 1,501 institutions from 106 countries.
Quacquarelli Symonds assesses institutions based on eight indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-to-student ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty ratio, international student ratio, international research network, employment outcomes, and sustainability.
According to its findings, the top 10 universities in the world are from the United States, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Singapore.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA); Imperial College London (UK); Stanford University (USA); and the University of Oxford (UK).
Others include Harvard University (USA); University of Cambridge (UK); ETH Zurich (Switzerland); National University of Singapore (Singapore); University College London (UK); and California Institute of Technology (USA).
However, in Africa, the top 10 ranked universities are the University of Cape Town, South Africa at 150 in the globe, the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa at 291 on the global log, Stellenbosch University, South Africa at 302, the University of Johannesburg, South Africa at 308, and Cairo University, Egypt at 347.
Others are the University of Pretoria, South Africa at 363, the American University in Cairo, Egypt at 381, Ain Shams University, Egypt at 542, the University of Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa at 558, and Université de Tunis El Manar, Tunisia at 731-740.
University of Cape Town, South Africa
The University of Cape Town is a public research university in Cape Town, South Africa. It was established in 1829 as the South African College, and granted full university status in 1918, making it the oldest university in South Africa and the oldest university in Sub-Saharan Africa in continuous operation.
University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa
