Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has formally rejoined the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying the decision was driven by the need to end decades of political isolation and align the state with the federal government for accelerated development.
Speaking at the APC electronic registration ceremony held at the Coronation Hall of the Kano State Government House, Governor Yusuf said leadership must rise above personal comfort, sentiment and partisan interests in order to secure a better future for the state.
“After wide consultations and careful reflection on the future of Kano State and the present realities, I have relinquished my membership of the NNPP and joined a party that I believe is better positioned to deliver development for Kano,” the governor said.
He announced that the decision was taken collectively with members of his cabinet, 22 out of the 24 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, and all 44 local government chairmen in the state, who have agreed to align with the ruling APC.
Governor Yusuf explained that his return to the APC was anchored on the reality of working closely with the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to support the Renewed Hope Agenda, which he said would bring significant benefits to Kano State.
“This decision is not based on personal interest or any negative motive. It is purely for the good of Kano and our shared belief in transforming the state. We are choosing development over personal desires and progress over retrogressive politics,” he stated.
The governor said aligning with the central government would help end confrontational politics and create a calmer political atmosphere in the state. He stressed that his decision does not diminish the contributions of those who supported him politically in the past, expressing gratitude to them.
“My loyalty is to Kano first. Kano comes before anybody,” he said, while urging former governor and political leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to view the development from the standpoint of progress and the overall interest of the state.
As part of efforts to stabilise the polity, Governor Yusuf announced the establishment of a Kano Elders Council, made up of respected non-partisan individuals. He said the council would provide guidance, promote reconciliation and help sustain unity and moral balance in the state.
The event was attended by top APC leaders, including former Kano State Governor and ex-APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje; Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin; Kawu Sumaila; Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna; Inuwa Waya; as well as national and state lawmakers of the party. From Adeola Ajakaiye, Kano
