Tragedy struck the Saburi 2 community in Abuja on Wednesday following the death of Stephen Chidubem, a young man who reportedly took his own life at his residence on Abba Street, located behind the Anglican Church in the area.
Sources confirmed that Chidubem was found hanging from a ceiling fan with a rope, in what emergency officials and investigators believe to be a case of suicide.
Responders who arrived at the scene quickly evacuated his body to the Kubwa General Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead by a medical doctor.
His remains have since been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary pending an autopsy.
A handwritten suicide note was recovered at the scene, which may have led to his death.
In the note, Chidubem cited gambling addiction as the primary reason for his action, expressing remorse to those he owed and acknowledging the toll his financial troubles had taken on his relationships.
“Sorry to everyone who cared. I can’t continue putting people in trouble because of my gambling addiction. Please forgive me Elvis, Paul, and all I’m owing. And you, Bishop Andy Ero, give the balance of ₦507,500 to Elvis or Paul”, the note read.
Community members said the young man had been battling a severe gambling habit for some time, which left him overwhelmed by debt and mental distress.
Several residents described him as a quiet but deeply troubled individual who had recently withdrawn from social circles.
