Hussaini Aliyu, chairman of Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State—where 25 schoolgirls were abducted on Monday—has released the names of the victims.
Aliyu also refuted claims by U.S. lawmaker Riley Moore, who alleged that the abduction of the Maga schoolgirls occurred in a Christian area.
He clarified that all the kidnapped girls are Muslims and stressed that there has never been any religious crisis in Zuru Emirate, which hosts the Maga community where the school is located.
The LGA chairman cautioned the U.S. lawmaker against making unverifiable statements capable of dividing the country along religious or ethnic lines, noting that the government’s priority is to secure the release of the abducted pupils.
He disclosed that the girls are students in Junior Secondary School 2 and 3 and Senior Secondary School 2 and 3 (JSS 2–3 and SSS 2–3).
