Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, former Chief Justice of Nigeria, has passed away at the age of 71.
His death was confirmed on Tuesday by Bala Mohammed, Bauchi State Governor, through a condolence statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado.
According to the statement, the retired Chief Justice died on Tuesday in a hospital in Saudi Arabia following a long period of illness.
Governor Mohammed described the passing of Justice Muhammad as a major loss to Bauchi State, the Nigerian judiciary, and the country as a whole.
He said the late jurist was one of Bauchi State’s most illustrious sons, whose lifetime was defined by honesty, commitment, and a deep respect for the rule of law.
The governor noted that Justice Muhammad had an exemplary judicial career, steadily rising through the ranks with distinction.
He served as a High Court Judge, a Justice of the Court of Appeal, a Justice of the Supreme Court, and later as the Chief Justice of Nigeria between 2019 and 2022.
According to the statement, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad embodied patriotism and dedicated his life to the cause of justice and national development. His death, the governor said, represents a significant setback not only for Bauchi State but also for Nigeria’s judicial system and the sustenance of the rule of law.

Governor Mohammed further remarked that the former Chief Justice earned widespread admiration for his sound legal knowledge, discipline, and meaningful contributions to strengthening Nigeria’s judiciary. He added that the national honour of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) awarded to the late jurist reflected his exceptional service to the nation.
The governor expressed his sincere sympathies to the bereaved family, members of the legal community, friends, and the people of Bauchi State and Nigeria at large. He prayed that Almighty Allah grant the deceased eternal rest, and give solace and fortitude to all those affected by his loss.
He prayed that Justice Muhammad’s legacy of integrity, wisdom, and devoted service would continue to inspire generations to come.
