Former EFCC Chairman Bawa released from DSS custody
Abdurasheed Bawa, the former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has been released from detention.
Bawa’s release comes after he was arrested by the Department of State Service (DSS) on June 14, 2023, shortly following his suspension from the position of EFCC Chairman by President Bola Tinubu over allegations of abuse of office.
Bawa regained his freedom on Wednesday night at the national headquarters of the secret police in Abuja.

The DG of Nigeria’s NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa, believes Nigeria can be a global talent exporter.
He emphasised the need for collaboration between the public and private sectors to harness digital technology for job creation and economic growth.
Inuwa spoke at the 2023 Digital Nigeria Conference, highlighting Nigeria’s potential in talent competition.

Nigerian railway’s e-ticketing system ready to roll next week
The Nigerian Railway Corporation is set to introduce electronic ticketing for the standard gauge network next week.
This announcement came from NRC’s Managing Director, Fidet Okhiria, during a recent interview.
The e-ticketing platform is in its final testing phase and will launch for a limited audience before becoming available to the public.
Okhiria highlighted that this system will channel ticket sales revenue directly to the government, reducing the chances of corruption and revenue loss.
Initially, the e-ticketing will start with the Abuja-Kaduna route and expand to other key routes like Lagos-Ibadan and Itakpe-Warri.
US injects $244 million into 18,000 Nigerian small businesses
The United States is supporting 18,000 Nigerian small businesses with a $244 million investment to stimulate economic growth and entrepreneurship.
This initiative, part of the “Feed the Future Nigeria Agribusiness Investment activity,” has assisted micro, small, and medium enterprises in seven states, mobilising significant agricultural investment.
These businesses can now expand their operations, particularly in aquaculture, cowpea, maize, rice, and soybean production.
Agriculture plays a vital role in Nigeria’s economy, employing 35 percent of the workforce, and collaboration between public and private sectors is crucial for improving the business environment for farmers.
At least 22 killed in tragic Maine mass shooting
A tragic mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine, left at least 22 people dead and 50 to 60 wounded. The shooting occurred at various locations, including a bowling alley, a bar, and a Walmart distribution center.
The suspect, Robert Card, is considered armed and dangerous, and law enforcement is actively investigating. President Joe Biden has been briefed and is offering federal support.
If the death toll is confirmed, it would be one of the deadliest shootings in the U.S. since 2019, as gun violence continues to rise.
