With increasing global opportunities in video-technology, Federal Government has called on stakeholders operating in the video-tech sector to continuously uphold standards and explore investment opportunities in the sector for the growth of the economy, while advancing wealth creation.
Speaking at this year’s World Standards Day celebration organised by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), with the theme: “International Standards create global stage,” Mariam Katagum, minister of state for industry trade and investment, said the advent of video technology had re-defined international global standards and provided opportunities for nations to leverage and advance their communication technology.
She pointed out that international standards must meet industry demands in ensuring better opportunities in the sector, since revolution and opportunities for the world as a global village was expanding.
“Having global standards meant that videos encoded in one device can be decoded in another regardless of device being used thereby introducing the economics of scale that grows the market. This could give investors the confidence to invest in new tech-service.”
In his earlier remarks, the director-general of SON, Osita Abuloma, said this year’s topic had been chosen to show impact of video technology as a unifying factor in advancing the cause of humanity and globalisation.
“It is the celebration and the acknowledgement of video- standards and the advancement of different modes of videos that enables peoples to tell their stories and the unification and how it impacts on our general life. Considering the advancement of postal services, and telling of stories through video messages have been standardised. It is worldwide celebration to acknowledge that global impact.
“The key lesson is that there should be order in the harmonisation of video messages. Order makes it easy for you to have a message in one device and transmit it to other device – hence driving unification of our messaging system globally.
“The unification of standards by all stakeholders of mode of video messages is key in promoting unification of humanity and telling their stories with relative ease. The ease, the quality of communication would be continuously standardised to advance the cause of humanity,” he stated.
