The Federal Government on Wednesday officially opened a “smart” police station in Abuja, in a move to modernise Nigeria’s law enforcement infrastructure.
The facility, located in Katampe community in Nigeria’s capital city, incorporates advanced technology to enhance policing, and is designed to improve operational efficiency and service delivery to the public.
Commissioning the facility, Ibrahim Gaidam, Minister of police affairs, highlighted the station’s role in transforming the country’s police force.
“For many years, the rapidly growing Mpape community has felt the pressing need for a befitting and functional police facility.

“This modern facility not only provides a professional and conducive workspace for our officers but also serves as a symbol of progress, peace, and partnership between the police and the people,” Gaidam stated.
He noted that the smart station is a key part of government’s effort to modernise policing and ensure that the Nigeria Police Force operates with cutting-edge tools to tackle contemporary security challenges.
Built by the Nigerian Police Trust Fund, the smart police station is equipped with advanced surveillance systems, real-time communication tools, and automated data management, all aimed at boosting operational responsiveness and efficiency.
Gaidam commended the Trust Fund for its continuous efforts in bridging critical resource gaps within the police force.
In addition to its technological features, the station is designed to ensure greater transparency and accountability in policing.
“This facility is more than just concrete and steel—it embodies our collective resolve to entrench law and order, improve community-police relations, and ensure that every citizen can live without fear. It stands as a beacon of hope, a pledge of protection, and a commitment to service delivery at the grassroots,” he stressed.
The Minister emphasised that the station would serve as a model for future police stations across Nigeria.
Gaidam urged the officers who will serve at the station, to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and community engagement.

He also appealed to the residents of Mpape and surrounding communities, to take ownership of the new facility and work closely with the police.
He noted that effective policing thrives on mutual trust and active community participation, and that cooperation is essential for the success of this initiative.
In his remarks at the commissioning ceremony, Mohammed Sheidu, Executive Secretary, Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF), reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to strengthening internal security and police welfare.
Speaking at the dual event — the commissioning of the Katampe Modern Divisional Police Headquarters and the groundbreaking for a 6-man Rank and File Quarters — Sheidu described it as a landmark in Nigeria’s journey toward smarter, people-centered policing.
Sheidu outlined the key features of the new police station, which include a fully equipped facility with perimeter security, CCTV surveillance, firefighting systems, and sustainable water and power infrastructure.
The station is powered by a 20kW off-grid solar system, delivered in partnership with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), ensuring 24/7 operations without reliance on the national grid.
“This is not just another station — it is a secure, efficient, and community-oriented policing hub, built to meet the evolving demands of law enforcement in today’s Nigeria,” he stressed.

The event also marked the groundbreaking of residential quarters for rank-and-file officers—a project aimed at improving welfare and morale.
“No officer should carry the burden of duty while enduring poor living conditions. This project reflects our respect for those who serve,” Sheidu stated.
He encouraged officers to maintain professionalism and take pride in the facility. He also called on the Katampe community to collaborate with the police in fostering safety and trust.
Sheidu further emphasised the NPTF’s focus on transparency and impact, saying, “We are not just building structures—we are building confidence in our institutions, and in the future of policing in Nigeria.”
