The Federal Government on Sunday, said Nigeria will analysis the results of the sent samples of suspected infected monkeypox victims on Sunday.
The Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole, revealed this on Saturday evening when he had a joint press conference with World Health Organization (WHO), Regional Director for Africa, Rebecca, in Abuja, on the latter’s assessment of North-East.
Adewole explained that the samples collected from the suspected cases of monkeypox were divided into two, one was analysis in Nigeria while the other one was done in Senegal.
According to the Minister: “the samples were divided into two, one is being analysis in Nigeria at Ede, African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases (ACEGID) there and another sample went to Senegal. And we will be looking at both reports in the next few hours.”
It would be recalled that the Federal Government through Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), had on 9thOctober, 2017, confirmed suspected outbreak of monkeypox in 7 states in Nigeria, which included Bayelsa, Rivers, Ekiti, Akwa Ibom, Lagos, Ogun and Cross River states. And 31 people were suspected to be infected.
But said samples have been collected for laboratory confirmation.
Amanda Pam, Secretary of Health and Human Services Secretariat, said seven suspected cases have been recorded in Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and samples of 6 cases have been sent to Senegal for second opinion.
It would be recalled that on Wednesday, there was a rumored two cases of monkey pox diseases at Gwarimpa General Hospital, Abuja. Abuja residents panicked and were scared.
