The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has warned members of the public to disregard a viral counter-message circulating on social media which claims that its Operation Go Cashless SMS notification is a scam.
The Authority said the misleading message, which advises recipients not to open the SMS link on grounds that it could drain their bank accounts, is false and unfounded.
“The attention of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has been drawn to misinformation circulating in relation to SMS notifications regarding the commencement date of the Operation Go Cashless initiative.
“Specifically, a counter-message currently being shared advises recipients not to open the SMS link, alleging that it is a scam designed to drain bank accounts,” the statement read
According to a statement posted on the Agency’s X handle on Friday, signed by Henry Agbebire, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, FAAN clarified that the original SMS informing airport users about the commencement date of the Operation Go Cashless initiative is legitimate.
According to the Authority, the authorised message was duly disseminated as part of its nationwide public sensitisation campaign ahead of the programme’s rollout.
FAAN stressed that for the avoidance of doubt, the Operation Go Cashless programme will officially commence on March 1, 2026, marking the transition to a fully cashless and contactless payment system across all airport payment points nationwide.
