A student from Greensprings School’s IB Diploma Programme and her teacher received a combined sum of $15,000 for their roles in promoting environmental sustainability.
Amara Nwuneli, an IB2 student was selected as the winner for the African region at the Earth Prize Awards, a global competition that focuses on promoting environmental awareness and sustainable practices among young people and recognising outstanding contributions to environmental sustainability.
Nwuneli was awarded $12,500 in recognition of her impactful work through her youth-led NGO, Preserve Our Roots, while her teacher, Abbey Ogunlade, was honoured with the $2,500 Educator of the Year Award for his exceptional mentorship and commitment to nurturing the next generation of environmental leaders.
Her visionary leadership and unwavering dedication to green initiatives have inspired her peers and garnered well-deserved global acclaim as she emerged winner from over 10,000 student applicants worldwide.
Nwuneli nominated Ogunlade for this award, citing his invaluable support and guidance throughout her journey.

Meanwhile, Esther Alabi, a student of Greensprings Secondary School, Lekki, has excelled at the first-ever edition of the Spelling Bee in Nigeria (SPIN). The competition, which began with 102 participants from across the country, culminated in a thrilling national final at the United States Consul General’s residence in Ikoyi.
The highly competitive event tested students on complex words of Greek, Latin, French, and Spanish origins, as well as their understanding of etymology and the rules of word formation.
The event, which was both rigorous and intellectually stimulating, gradually narrowed down contestants to 64 for the final round. Alabi won the Vocabulary Award for her exceptional skills in vocabulary acquisition and securing an impressive fourth place overall.
According to Greensprings management, Alabi’s success is a reflection of her dedication and strong academic support received from her teachers and the school community.
