The Federal Government on Wednesday officially released 70 inmates from the Kuje Custodial centre in line with a presidential pardon and the flag off to decongest the custodial centres nationwide in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbeaola, told reporters in Abuja, after the release that out of the 70 inmates that were released from the Kuje Custodial centre in Abuja, 41 were from the federal level while 29 inmates were released by the Chief of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ishaq Below.
He added that the instruments of release have been signed by the appropriate authorities.

He also said that two prominent Nigerians, foremost nationalists, the late Anthony Enahoro, who moved the motion for independence in 1953 and former Governor of the Old Bendel State ( now Edo and Delta states) have also received a presidential pardon.
The minister said that 2,600 inmates were qualified nationwide for the presidential amnesty but they are not federal offenders. He said further that the state governments will be urged to release these inmates in line with the Federal Government guidelines.
Aregbesola, who led the delegation to the Kuje Custodial centre said: “the flag off of presidential pardon of inmates is in continuation of the decongestion of the custodial centres”.
