To ensure seamless and stress-free operations, the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), a professional organization whose members are certified as qualified tax practitioners or administrators said it would be digitalising most of its activities.
With the mandate to promote professional ethics in tax, efficiency and best tax practices in Nigeria, the Lagos district of CITN made this known during their recent Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Lagos.
According to Yemi Sanni, the new Chairman of CITN, Lagos district a number of the district’s operations will have to go digital as he plans to ensure digitalization will become the new normal of the district.
“The way things would be done going forward will be a bit different from how it’s been in the past,” Sanni said during the district’s AGM which was also the day of its election for the 2020 to 2022 chairmanship.
Exacerbated by the outbreak of COVID-19 which forced a lot of economic activities to be doing virtually the new chairman of CITN Lagos district said: “It is partly as a result of COVID-19 but even before the pandemic it was part of the things I already had in mind that I was going to implement to ensure a seamless process.”

Meanwhile, in electing the executives of the 2020 to 2022 chairmanship executives of the CITN Lagos district, the organization employed the use of online voting following the 50 persons social gathering restriction.
“That is how a whole lot of our activities will be going forward and even after COVID-19,” Sanni said.
Some of the newly elected executives of the Lagos arm of the 38 years old organization include Zainab Abdulkareem; vice-chairman, Ini Esau James; deputy vice-chairman, Sike Ibiwoye; General secretary, Segun Adeyeye; Asst hẹn. Secretary, David Apaflo; Honorary Treasurer, Tayo Falore; financial secretary, Oragwu Chinenye; Legal Adviser, Michael Alatise; Publicity Secretary, and Yetunde Olowofoyeku; Ex officio.
Highlighting some of the key achievement under the last leadership of 2018 to 2020 Charmian tenure, Adebayo Adeyeye, the immediate past chairman of the Lagos district said his administration was able to empower some of its district members through entrepreneurship training.
“We promised to train our members on entrepreneurship projects and we did that. We showed our member how they can become independent in their trades and practice,” Adeyeye said.
Speaking on Nigeria’s tax industry, the outing going chairman said: “The government needs to create a conducive environment to both the administrator, the practitioners and the taxpayers so that all stakeholders will do more in terms of compliance.”
According to the new and 17th Chairman of CITN Lagos district who previously served as the vice-chairman in the last administration the 2018 to 2020 administration also carried out a lot of awareness and sensitization on the need for Nigerians to perform their civic responsibility in regards to complying with their tax payment.
The new administration of the Lagos CITN district also plans to increase its members’ empowerment to ensure they become more economically buoyant. According to Sanni, empowering it district members would also mean more support for the district’s activities.
“Once they are empowered they will be able to support a lot of the programs of CITN as against us going to source for funds outside,” Sanni said.
