Nigerian football icon Christian Chukwu, fondly known as “Chairman”, was on Saturday laid to rest at his hometown in Obe, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.
Chukwu, a former Super Eagles captain and head coach, passed away on April 12 at the age of 74.
His burial concluded a series of events that spanned nearly 10 days, including nights of tributes in Lagos and Enugu, as well as a colloquium in his honour.
Speaking at the funeral, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah described Chukwu as a national treasure whose humility, discipline, and empathy inspired all who encountered him.
“For me, and I believe for so many as well, it is difficult for you to have met Chairman without being inspired by his simplicity and humility,” Mbah said.
“As a government, we will always stand by the family and ensure that Chukwu is immortalised, for indeed he served and loved Enugu and Nigeria with all his heart.”
Earlier, in his homily, the Anglican Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Rt Rev. Samuel Ike, praised Chukwu as a football colossus whose leadership transformed Enugu Rangers, the Super Eagles, and Nigerian football as a whole.
“Chukwu was a strong man who led his team through battles and victories. He was generous, dedicated, and committed both to his family and community,” Bishop Ike noted.
Family representative, Chukwuemeka Chukwu Jr, thanked dignitaries and well-wishers for honouring his father’s legacy, describing him as a man who lived and breathed football.
Born in Enugu, Chukwu is celebrated as one of Nigeria’s greatest defenders, captaining both Enugu Rangers and the Super Eagles. He famously led Nigeria to its first Africa Cup of Nations triumph in 1980 before later managing both Rangers and the national team.
