Brentford have turned down Newcastle United’s latest offer of £40m for striker Yoane Wissa. The Magpies submitted the improved bid on Wednesday, proposing a £35m initial fee plus £5m in add-ons, but it still fell short of Brentford’s valuation.
Sources told BBC Sport that Newcastle reopened talks with the Bees following discussions between Wissa and club owner Matthew Benham on Tuesday.
The 28-year-old DR Congo international has made clear his desire to join Newcastle, but Brentford remain reluctant to sanction his departure.
Earlier this week, Wissa removed all references to Brentford from his Instagram account, further fuelling speculation over his future. The forward scored 19 Premier League goals last season and is considered integral to Thomas Frank’s attack, particularly after the summer exit of Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United.
Newcastle had previously seen a £30m offer rejected, but are determined to land Wissa before the transfer deadline.
The player himself has pressed for a move, even threatening to down tools earlier this summer when he flew home early from Brentford’s pre-season camp in Portugal.
While relations have since improved, Wissa has continued to insist he wants to move to St James’ Park.
Brentford’s recent signing of winger Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth had given Wissa confidence that his transfer north would be approved this week.
However, the Bees’ refusal of Newcastle’s £40m proposal suggests they are prepared to hold firm unless their valuation is fully met.
