Nigerian artist and creative director Ayomide Ayonaike is set to debut a powerful new solo exhibition, titled “Tickets to My Downfall,” opening on November 9, 2025, at The Ark in Lagos.
Known for his raw visual storytelling, Ayonaike’s latest body of work confronts identity, personal failure, and emotional transformation. The provocative exhibition title alone raises eyebrows and questions, but Ayonaike is clear about its message: this is a public reckoning.
“Everyone has their opinions about who I should be as a man, as a son, as a father. The roles came with silent rules, expectations & an accepted manner of behaviour. By all accounts, I failed,” he says.
Tickets to My Downfall serves as both a defiant response and a deeply personal narrative.
Featuring 17 original works and 2 bonus pieces, the exhibition explores what happens when one chooses a path outside society’s rigid expectations, a path some predicted would lead to ruin.
Instead, Ayonaike reframes that perceived failure was indeed essential to his growth and self-discovery.
“This isn’t a clean story and it’s not meant to be. This is me documenting the fall and the quiet, steady rise that followed,” he explains.
Highlights of the exhibition include:
· A guided audio tour, featuring Ayonaike’s own reflections on each piece
· The Downfall Tapes, a curator’s accessible via QR codes throughout the gallery space
· Limited-edition prints of 6 select works, capped at 31 copies each in celebration of the artist’s 31st birthday
The exhibition is a layered, immersive experience designed to challenge viewers’ perceptions of success and failure, while offering rare insight into the artist’s emotional journey.
Tickets to My Downfall open on November 9, 2025, at The Ark, Lagos.
