Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, according to an AFP report, has claimed responsibility, in a video, for the June 25 twin blast at the Apapa fuel depot, in Nigeria’s commercial hub, Lagos. Though authorities insist the incident was an industrial accident caused by a gas cannister, Shekau said in the video, “I ordered (the bomber) who went and detonated.”
There indeed have been a lot of ‘whispers’, days after the explosion, suggesting the attack was masterminded by the islamic sect, with rumors widely claiming that government was simply trying to avoid “causing panic” in the city with an estimated population of 12 million people.
If true, this would be the first documented attack by Boko Haram in Lagos. Shekau also admits being behind the most recent bomb blast in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city. The explosion at the popular EMAB plaza killed 22 and injured many others.
