The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has appeared before the Senate Committee on Police Affairs over Benue killings behind closed doors.
This followed the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum given by the Senate to the IGP to fish out the killers.
In his opening remarks before he sent journalists out of the meeting venue at Senate New Building 2.21 on Friday, Chairman of the committee, Abu Ibrahim (APC, Katsina State), said the meeting is not for media coverage even as warned the IGP not to disclose the outcome of the security briefing to the Press.
The senator, however, disclosed that the report of the committee will be presented in plenary next week.
Attempts by journalists to speak with the committee chairman and the police chief after the over one hour, 30 minutes briefing proved abortive.
Recall that the upper legislative chamber had given the IGP 14-day ultimatum to arrest and prosecute the perpetrators of 73 individuals in Benue State.
This was sequel to the adoption of the report of the Committee on Security Infrastructure, which visited the state on an on-the-spot assessment.
But speaking on the floor of the Senate on Wednesday, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Gombe State, Joshua Lidani, expressed regret that the IGP had not complied with the Senate’s resolution.
To this end, lawmakers directed Idris to appear before the panel to explain why no arrests had been made.
