Eric Gugua, tech educator and social influencer, has urged youths to focus on being a value-added person in society rather than seeking monetary gains for everything they do.
This was disclosed during the first edition of the Beyond Convention Conference held on Saturday in Lagos.
In his keynote address, Gugua explored the human connection with money, noting that financial pursuit often comes from a desire for accumulation beyond need, driven by an influence that shapes behaviour.
“Finance is not necessarily about having the money; it’s about the amount of value we add to our society. Money is one of the measures of value, but whenever you see wealth without value and it’s celebrated, the foundation is not good,” he said.
He pointed out humanity’s ability to resolve challenges, suggesting finance as a key motivator, even without understanding the situation.
“Humans are very good at solving problems that threaten their existence, and finance is that one factor that makes people act the way they act without prior knowledge. People, when faced with the opportunity to change certain situations and they discover that they enjoy it, they stop,” Eric noted.
The conference which hosted over 3,000 participants featured Roundtable guests and Keynote speakers, including Michael Sani Amanesi (Mc Lively), Salem King, Kagan, Hertz Fauzan, Egemba Chinoso Fidelis (Aproko Doctor), and Dr. Tochukwu MacFoy.
Other speakers at the breakout session were Nnenna Kayode-Lawal, a certified Executive and Transformation Coach; Ziora Okwor-Wewan, a powerhouse in corporate law; Adenike Ruth Adesegun, a business strategist and storyteller; Scott Eneje, a legend in Nigeria’s tech space; and Victoria Ogbujah, CEO of CVO Consulting.
Beyond Convention Conference was tailored to engage a diverse and impactful audience. It explored foundational issues around faith, technology, personal development, and careers, as they are central to society.
“We are doing this because they are foundational issues in society, and if we don’t understand, we will continue to experience the same thing we experience. It’s important to note that these conversations are beyond these topics. The basics are to discuss beyond the normal level of what we see them to be,” Eric said in his welcome address.
Discussing further, the convener emphasised the need to focus on enduring impact over immediate financial gains.
“Beyond the idea of making it, it’s important that we choose the idea of suffering in making a reasonable change. Wealth is the evidence of money being supplied, and money is the reward of work done. However, it is the amount of value we add to society that matters,” Eric emphasised.
Addressing his path as a medical content creator, Egemba Chinoso Fidelis (Aproko Doctor) discussed making decisions that go beyond immediate feelings and emotions. “Follow your passion, but ensure that it is sustainable in the long run,” he said.
On maintaining consistency as a Content Creator, Salem King cautioned youths against overthinking and the desire for perfection before publishing work. “It may not be your best work, but it is today’s work. Let it out and be as consistent as possible,” he stated.
Michael Sani Amanesi (MC Lively) shared insights into his content creation career, detailing his pursuit of stability after various temporary jobs. He offered a perspective on achievement and emphasised the importance of following the process the growth.
“There is no destination to success because your destination is always changing. Your journey is more important than where you are going,” he said.
