Barcelona’s board has approved a €7million bank guarantee to complete the registrations of new signings Marcus Rashford and Joan Garcia, as the club races to have both players available for Saturday’s La Liga opener against RCD Mallorca.
Neither player has been registered due to La Liga’s salary cap restrictions, but according to SER Catalunya, an emergency board meeting on Wednesday resulted in the approval of the guarantee to help meet the financial requirements.
The move, combined with the pending validation of the club’s €100 million VIP seats lease and a new sponsorship deal with DR Congo, is expected to bring Barcelona back within its salary limit, enabling Rashford and Garcia’s registration.
The shortfall reportedly originated from other sports departments within the club, prompting the board to assume the guarantee. If the funds are not repaid before the end of their mandate, board members will be personally liable for the amount.
However, the registrations still hinge on an external factor: approval from auditors Crowe to include the €100 million VIP seats lease in Barcelona’s accounts.
Without this validation, the club will remain over the salary limit and subject to La Liga’s spending restrictions, which cap spending at 60% of savings from wages or player sales.
