The board of trustees of Augustine University, Ilara-Epe, Lagos, has announced the appointment of Anthony Akinwale as its third substantive vice-chancellor.
Steve Omojafor, the chairman of the board of trustees at Augustine University, made this known recently when he said that the appointment is set to take effect from September 1, 2025, upon the conclusion of the tenure of Christopher Odetunde, the incumbent vice-chancellor.
Akinwale, a Catholic Priest of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), is a professor of Systematic Theology and Thomistic Philosophy. He is widely recognised as a distinguished scholar and seasoned administrator.
His academic and administrative experience spans decades, with previous roles including pioneer vice-chancellor of the Dominican University, Ibadan, from 2017 to 2022, and he is the current deputy vice-chancellor of Augustine University, a post he assumed from 2023 till date.
According to the board of trustees, the appointment of Akinwale as the substantive vice-chancellor is a strategic step toward reinforcing Augustine University’s commitment to academic excellence, moral integrity, and holistic student formation.
Akinwale is known for his intellectual depth and dedication to the values of Catholic higher education, both within Nigeria and globally.
The board of trustees, in a statement, expressed deep appreciation to Christopher Odetunde, the outgoing vice-chancellor, for his contributions, while congratulating Akinwale on his new role.
It is believed Akinwale will bring to the university experience gained over decades of academic leadership, intellectual depth and unflinching commitment to the values of Catholic higher education.
Augustine University upholds the noble tradition of Catholic Higher Education of achieving intellectual, cultural and moral excellence by preparing students for leadership and enterprise.
The university was licensed for take-off on March 15, 2015 and inaugurated on October 23, 2015. Academic activities began with the resumption of 100-level students into approved programmes on November 30, 2015. The maiden matriculation took place on April 1, 2016.
