A high-profile meeting in Abuja aimed at forging a political coalition against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was briefly thrown into chaos on Sunday following a disagreement among delegates.
Held at the Abuja Continental Hotel, the meeting drew several prominent opposition figures, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar; Peter Obi, Labour Party presidential candidate; Rotimi Amaechi, former minister of transportation; and Babachir Lawal, ex-Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
A viral video circulating on social media shows delegates locked in a heated argument, with a crowd swarming the podium as the atmosphere turned rowdy.
The disruption, according to reports, occurred after Lawal nominated a delegate to speak on behalf of Jigawa State. This sparked a protest from other delegates from the state, who stormed the stage to block the nominee from speaking, insisting on selecting their own representative.
Security personnel, including police officers and operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), swiftly intervened to restore order.
Once calm was restored, Mustapha Lamido, son of former Jigawa governor Sule Lamido, and another delegate were eventually chosen to speak for the state.
