Olympian Asigbe Adaeze Victoria clinched gold medal in the female categories and emerged as the overall best athlete of the 2016 edition of Agoma Open Taekwondo Martial Arts Festival held recently between June 2 and June 4 at the Table Tennis Hall of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
Expressing her delight, Adaeze said “I feel happy and excited because it’s been a while I trained coming back was like a little bit of struggle but I thank God.”
“Agoma has been competition that has given up coming athlete opportunity to exhibit their talent because it’s not all competition that all talent are allowed to exhibit their talents.”
Convener of the tournament, Olympian Emmanuel Oghenejobo, who is also the sole sponsor of the event, said the urge to give back to the society gave birth to the Agoma Festival.
“I needed to give something back to my country, it this Taekwondo that made me an Olympic silver medalist in1992 Olympic World Champion, 1993 All African Games medalist, so I taught I needed to give something back to Taekwondo, that’s what brought about all this,” Oghenejobo the sponsor of the event since 2001 added.
Oghenejobo further said the event have discovered many talents that have represented the country at international level.
“Many of the young men who have won medals at the Olympics and the All African Games, like Chika Chukwumerije went through this event, and most of the champion in taekwondo past through this event.”
He however lamented the challenge in getting sponsors for the event.
“We’ve been reaching out to corporate bodies and government but the thing is we need professionals to do all this things, but we are yet to get one.
Thirty four clubs organization comprising of fourteen states competed at different categories, which includes; fin weight, fly weight, banter weight, feather weight, light weight, welter weight middleweight, heavy weight, for male and female.
