The Gift
Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Qatar’s Prime Minister, confirmed the gift, emphasising it’s not an attempt to influence the President. The plane, worth around $200 million, requires significant modifications to meet security standards. “We’re not trying to influence the President,” Al Thani said, dismissing concerns about the gift’s intentions.
The Aircraft
The Boeing 747-8 is a marvel of engineering, boasting:
Advanced Materials: New-generation aluminium alloys and graphite composites for reduced maintenance and increased productivity. These materials are more durable and better able to resist corrosion and damage.
Efficient Engine: The GEnx engine, one of the cleanest and most fuel-efficient turbofan engines in the world. It’s based on the 787 Dreamliner engine but optimized for the 747-8.
Luxurious Interior: Exclusive private first-class section, larger pivot bins, and noise-reduction technology. The new larger pivot bins provide space for four full-sized roll-aboard bags, and the bins store into the ceiling and out of the way.
Environmental Benefits: 15 decibels quieter than ICAO noise limits and 52 percent below ICAO limits for nitrogen oxide emissions. The GEnx engine’s high bypass ratio decreases noise in the surrounding community, and dual chevrons and a sound-absorbing liner on the nacelle diminish noise during takeoff.

The Makeover
The Air Force will undertake extensive work to ensure the plane meets security requirements. “Any civilian aircraft will take significant modifications to do so,” said Air Force Secretary Troy Meink. “Based on the secretary’s direction, we are postured and we’re off looking at that right now, what it’s going to take for that particular aircraft.”

According to Boeing, emissions such as hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, smoke, and nitrogen oxides affect air quality near airports. The 747-8 performs substantially better than all 2008 emissions standards established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP). Most significantly, the GEnx combustor dramatically reduces the airplane’s emissions of nitrogen oxides, which fall 52 percent below ICAO limits and well below the more stringent limits anticipated in the future.
