Cristiano Ronaldo has paid heartfelt tribute following the death of Aurelio da Silva Pereira, the influential coach and talent scout credited with discovering and nurturing some of Portugal’s greatest footballers. Pereira passed away at the age of 77.
Pereira, who founded Sporting Lisbon’s recruitment and training department in 1988, played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of numerous elite players, including Ronaldo, Luis Figo, Nani, and Ricardo Quaresma.
Ronaldo’s emotional farewell
Taking to social media, Ronaldo honoured the man who launched his glittering career.
“One of the greatest symbols of world training has left us, but his legacy will live on forever,” Ronaldo wrote.
“I will never stop being grateful for everything he did for me and so many other players. Until forever, Mr. Aurelio. Thank you for everything. Rest in peace.”
The man behind Portugal’s golden generation
Pereira’s impact on Portuguese football was monumental. Ten members of Portugal’s UEFA Euro 2016-winning squad—including Ronaldo—were products of the development system he helped to build. The squad was affectionately dubbed “The Aurelios” in recognition of his influence.
In recognition of his contributions, Pereira was awarded the Medal of Sporting Merit by the City of Lisbon in 2017, and in 2018, UEFA presented him with the Order of Merit for his service to European football development.
Tributes from the Portuguese Football Federation
The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) described Pereira’s passing as an “irreparable loss”:
“For history, in addition to the enormous legacy built by the man who discovered some of the best players in our history, there will be a kind person, of fine treatment and who always defended our talent,” the FPF said in a statement.
Sporting Lisbon, where Pereira spent much of his career as a player, coach, and scout, named their academy’s main pitch in his honour, reflecting his lasting impact on the club.
“He was a master in his field and a person everyone agreed upon,” the club stated.
“He will forever be remembered as one of the greatest names in the history of national football and, above all, in the history of Sporting Clube de Portugal.”
Nani: “You Were a Great Friend”
Fellow Sporting graduate and former Portugal international Nani also paid his respects online:
“Thank you for everything. You were a great friend, an excellent human being, who gave me good and important advice. I’ll never forget everything I learned from you, my friend.”
Aurelio Pereira’s legacy will endure through the generations of stars he mentored—his vision, compassion, and footballing intuition forever etched into the fabric of Portuguese football.
