A new global survey by HP has revealed that personalised, flexible work experiences are central to attracting and retaining top talent, particularly in today’s hybrid and digital-first world.
According to The Work Relationship Index, which surveyed 15,600 respondents worldwide, 65 percent of knowledge workers and business leaders now seek a more personalised work experience. Even more striking, 87 percent are willing to sacrifice a portion of their salary—on average 14 percent—to achieve this, with Gen Z prepared to give up nearly 20 percent.
“Today more than ever, tailored work essentially recognises employees’ need for flexibility, technology and tools, and upskilling to feel happy and productive,” said Yesh Surjoodeen, Southern Africa managing director at HP.
Retention is also closely tied to these experiences. The survey found that 68 percent of respondents would stay longer at companies offering tailored solutions that support well-being and professional growth.
With hybrid work now a long-term reality, businesses are investing in smart technologies like AI-powered video tools and cloud-enabled platforms. These tools not only boost productivity but also foster inclusivity.
“Connected workers are three times more likely to feel a sense of belonging and fulfilment, compared to their isolated peers,” Surjoodeen said.
Yet, a disconnect remains: while 77 percent believe it’s important to have the right tools to succeed at work, only 27% consistently receive them.
The research also points to a growing focus on sustainability, with workers increasingly valuing companies that integrate eco-friendly technologies and reduce environmental impact.
As Surjoodeen puts it, “Work is no longer just a place – it’s an experience shaped by intelligent technology, flexible environments, and robust digital integration. The future of work isn’t coming – it’s already here.”
