The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lifted the suspension placed on Governor Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto State.
The decision was taken after a meeting of the presidential committee set up by President Goodluck Jonathan to resolve the crisis rocking the PDP. The committee was led by Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State.
However, no mention was made in the case of the suspension of Governor Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers State.
Wamakko was suspended on June 5. In a communiqué at the end of a meeting on that day, the National Working Committee (NWC) said Governor Wamakko had ignored invitations and lawful directives of the NWC and demonstrated contempt for an organ of the party.
Meanwhile, the ruling party also announced that the party’s National Executive Council meeting will hold on Thursday, June 20.
The NEC is made up of national executive members and state governors on the platform of the party. It is over a year the party held its NEC meeting. Attempts by the party to hold NEC meeting had been scuttled by members of the National Working Committee to checkmate the governors of the party from calling for the sack of NWC members.
Article VIII, section 31(4/5) stipulates that “The NEC shall meet at least once in every quarter at the in
stance of the national party chairman or at the request of two-thirds of its membership, who shall notify the chairman at least 7 days prior to the meeting, and an emergency meeting may be summoned by the national chairman having regard to all the circumstances of the agenda.
“The quorum for the NEC meeting shall be 2/3rd of the membership drawn from at least 2/3rd of the zones in the federation and a simple majority shall pass any motion”.
