Supporters of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu have unveiled a new grassroots movement, Working People United, aimed at mobilising Nigerians across various sectors to support national reforms and economic development.
The movement was formally launched on Thursday in Abuja by its National Coordinator, Williams Eniredonana Akporeha, during an event held at the PTD Hotel in Utako.
Akporeha said the platform was created to bring together workers, artisans, traders, farmers, professionals and other productive citizens to promote greater participation in governance and strengthen support for policies designed to reposition the Nigerian economy.
According to him, the initiative seeks to serve as a bridge between government and the working class while encouraging constructive engagement on public policies and reforms.
He explained that the movement would focus on enlightening Nigerians on ongoing reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration since May 29, 2023, while advocating for policies that promote economic stability and the welfare of citizens.
“Working People United represents the collective voice of workers, artisans, traders, farmers, professionals and other hardworking Nigerians who form the backbone of the country’s economy,” Akporeha said.
He noted that the group would also advocate improved policy implementation, stressing that many government initiatives fail to achieve their intended impact due to weak execution.
Akporeha said the organisation plans to establish structures from the federal to the state and local government levels in order to reach both formal and informal sector workers across the country.
“We are talking about the working people of this country those on the wage bill as well as artisans, mechanics, traders and farmers who contribute immensely to the economy,” he said.
Also speaking at the event, Zino Onaemor, representative of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, said the movement aims to unite Nigerians in the working class in support of reforms aimed at strengthening the economy.
Similarly, Chinedu Ukadike, spokesperson, Natural Oil and Gas Suppliers Association of Nigeria, said the platform would help galvanise support for government policies while advocating effective implementation for the benefit of ordinary Nigerians.
Yamah Musa Former Nigerian ambassador to Mozambique, Madagascar and Mauritius, said the group supports ongoing governance reforms and believes broader citizen participation will strengthen accountability and national development.
In his remarks, Billy Gillis-Harry, National President of Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria, said the movement would continue to mobilise Nigerians at the grassroots level to support reforms aimed at rebuilding the economy and strengthening national institutions.
