Meet Mohammed Idris Haidara, newly-appointed career ambassador to The Netherlands
Mohammed Idris Haidara has been appointed as a career ambassador to the Netherlands by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Haidara is a seasoned career diplomat and strategist, with over two decades at the forefront of international relations, bringing an expert command of geopolitical analysis, international peace and security, and governmental affairs to his new diplomatic mission in The Hague.
He is transitioning into to this role following a successful tenure as the director of the Asia and Pacific Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja. In that capacity, he provided the critical strategic guidance necessary to navigate Nigeria’s complex diplomatic engagements across the region.
A central figure in shaping policy directions, Haidara has been instrumental in supporting high-level leadership decisions that have significantly strengthened Nigeria’s bilateral and multilateral relationships on the global stage.
Haidara’s trajectory is marked by a series of high-stakes international assignments. Between 2021 and 2024, he was a key figure at the Embassy of Nigeria in Bangkok, Thailand, where he served as Minister for Economic, Trade, and Investment Matters before ascending to the role of Chargé d’Affaires.
In these capacities, he oversaw the comprehensive spectrum of bilateral relations, specifically focusing on expanding trade frontiers and fostering investment opportunities between the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Southeast Asia.
Prior to his posting in Thailand, Haidara served as the acting director in the Office of the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2018 to 2021. This role in the Ministry’s central leadership allowed him to coordinate complex administrative and policy functions at the highest level of the Nigerian civil service. His versatility was further demonstrated during his tenure as special assistant to the Permanent Secretary on International Trade at the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment, where he provided expert analysis on global trade trends and offered recommendations to align Nigeria’s economic agenda with shifting international policies.
A scholar-practitioner, Haidara holds a Doctor of Public Administration from the Lyceum of the Philippines University, where he specialised in policy analysis. He also previously obtained a higher degree in Diplomacy from the Nigerian Foreign Service Academy, which he completed in 2004.
Throughout his career, Haidara has remained committed to advancing Nigeria’s global standing. By leveraging his deep understanding of international organisations and human rights, he continues to foster effective partnerships that drive national development and secure Nigeria’s interests on the global stage.
