Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos State Governor, has called on leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state to embrace greater responsibility in strengthening the party’s structure and sustaining its leadership role nationwide.
The governor made the call on Tuesday at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos Island, following the affirmation of the party’s newly elected State Executive Committee (Exco) during the APC congress.
The exercise, attended by over 2,000 delegates, saw the emergence of state executive members through a consensus arrangement, with many of the outgoing officials returning to office.
Addressing party faithful, Sanwo-Olu described the congress as a demonstration of unity and internal cohesion, noting that Lagos APC has continued to distinguish itself through discipline, fairness and inclusivity.
He charged the newly elected executives to see their positions as a call to service, urging them to deepen internal democracy and ensure that the party remains a reference point for others across the country.
According to him, the task ahead requires dedication and collective effort to consolidate the gains already recorded by the party in governance and grassroots mobilisation.
The governor also acknowledged the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose political mentorship, he said, has continued to shape the Lagos chapter’s progressive ideals.
In her remarks, the congress chairman from the national secretariat, Stella Okotete, described Lagos as central to the APC’s strength nationwide.
She urged members to uphold unity and sportsmanship, stressing that party leadership is about service rather than rivalry.
In his acceptance speech, the Lagos APC Chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi, assured members that the new executive would work assiduously to sustain the party’s dominance in the state.
Ojelabi thanked party stakeholders, including members of the State Assembly and the Governance Advisory Council, for their continued guidance and support, pledging that the party would remain focused on delivering good governance and sustainable development to the people of Lagos State.
He added that the congress marked the beginning of renewed commitment as the party prepares for future electoral contests.
