As more Nigerians spend time online for work, learning, and social interactions, the need to manage privacy and digital well-being has never been greater.
This is even as Google, on ‘Safer Internet Day’, is urging Nigerians to take charge of their digital lives, highlighting six practical ways to protect personal information, guard children online, and navigate the internet safely.
Quickly remove personal or explicit images.
Finding private images shared without consent can be distressing. Google now offers a dedicated removal tool. Users can click the three dots on an image in Search and select “Remove result,” or submit a detailed removal request form. Activating SafeSearch can also filter explicit content from search results.
Protect sensitive personal information.
Government-issued IDs, like passports or driver’s licenses, can appear online without consent, exposing users to identity theft. Through the “Results about you” hub in the Google app, Nigerians can now check if such information appears in Search and request its removal.
Guide children’s screen time and app use
Parents can use Google’s Family Link app to set screen time limits, approve or block apps, and lock devices when it’s time for breaks. The “School time” feature minimises distractions during homework, helping children develop healthy digital habits.
Safely monitor teens online.e
YouTube’s supervised accounts provide parents with insights into what their teens watch while allowing young users some independence. Content filters and viewing history features strike a balance between safety and autonomy.
Encourage deep learning over quick answers
Students may be tempted to rely on AI tools for instant solutions. Gemini’s Guided Learning feature breaks down complex math and science problems step by step, promoting understanding and critical thinking instead of just giving answers.
Spot misinformation and verify sources
The rise of fake news and AI-generated content makes digital literacy crucial. Google recommends the SIFT method: Stop, Investigate, Find, Trace. Tools like “About this image” help users verify images and trace their origins, helping families become discerning digital citizens.
These tips reflect a broader push to improve digital safety and literacy in Nigeria, empowering users of all ages to protect themselves, their families, and their personal information online.
